How to play Popsplit

Popsplit is a free multiplayer cell-eating game you play in the browser. You are one cell in a shared arena: eat anything smaller than you, stay clear of anything bigger, and finish the round on the leaderboard. No download, no install.

The rule in one line

Bigger eats smaller. Your mass decides who wins an overlap, so every decision in the arena is really a decision about mass: gain it by swallowing cells, lose it by splitting and ejecting, and never spend it in front of something that can eat the pieces.

Quick start

  1. Open the game and give your cell a name.
  2. Pick a server - each one is a different mode and a different crowd (see game modes below).
  3. Press Play. Your cell spawns in the arena.
  4. Move the mouse: your cell always drifts toward the pointer.
  5. Eat the small green pellets to grow. They are free mass and the fastest way to leave the starting size behind.
  6. Eat smaller players too - that is where the real mass is.
  7. Sign in (Discord or a username) to keep your level, coins and skins between visits.

Controls

On a desktop the mouse does the moving and the keyboard does everything else. Keys can be rebound in Settings > Hotkeys, and mouse buttons too - so if you know these controls from another cell game, you can make them match.

On a phone

The stick appears wherever your thumb lands instead of a fixed corner, so your hand does not have to travel to steer. The corners carry the actions a keyboard would: Split, D and x16 on one side, Eject on the other, chat and the menu above them. Holding the menu button switches full screen on and off; a tap opens the menu over the life you are playing.

Game modes

FFA

The classic free-for-all arena. Everyone is alone, everyone is food, and the leaderboard reshuffles all game.

Dual Mode

You control two bodies at once and can swap between them, so one of you can hold a valuable corner of the map while the other hunts.

Instant

Faster pacing and more XP for what you eat, which is what makes it a good place to level up quickly.

Mobile

The phone server: touch controls, a layout built for a small screen, and its own leaderboard.

Minions

On the servers that allow them, a minion is a second cell you can switch into for a few moments with Tab. It is a scout, a decoy, or a way to feed your main body without ever putting it at risk.

How to grow fast

Progress, coins and skins

Playing earns XP and coins: XP levels your account up (the progress bar sits in the lobby) and coins are spent in the store on skins, boosters and cosmetics. You can also draw your own skin and wear it, or link your Discord account so your name and level follow you between devices. None of this is needed to play - a guest with no account gets the same arena as anyone else.

Chat and commands

Press Enter to open the chat box. Plain text goes to everyone in the arena; type /h to see the command list, /kill to respawn immediately, and /pc followed by your message to talk only to your party.

Common questions

Is Popsplit free to play?

Yes. Popsplit is free and plays in the browser. There is no download, no install and no account needed to start playing - signing in only adds saved progress like level, coins and skins.

How do you control Popsplit?

The mouse steers your cell: it always moves toward the pointer, and the speed falls off as the cell grows. Space splits, W ejects mass, F freezes movement and X respawns instantly. Every key can be rebound in Settings > Hotkeys.

Can you eat a bigger cell by splitting?

Yes, sometimes. Splitting throws half your mass forward as a separate cell, so a split can reach prey that is bigger than one of your cells but smaller than the two together. Splitting into a bigger cell is how players usually die, so it is worth doing deliberately rather than by reflex.

What are the spiky green cells?

They are viruses. A cell larger than the virus that swallows one bursts into many small pieces, which is good news for whoever is chasing you. Feed one with ejected mass to move it, and hide behind it to make bigger players think twice.

Does Popsplit work on a phone?

Yes. On a touch screen the stick appears where your thumb lands instead of sitting in a fixed corner, and Split, D, x16 and Eject are buttons in the corners. Mobile mode is its own server with its own controls, and full screen is available from the menu button.

Is there chat, and are there commands?

There is a chat box in the corner - press Enter to type. Type /h for the list of commands, /kill to respawn immediately, and /pc followed by text to talk only to your party.

Is Popsplit like agar.io?

It is the same kind of game: a multiplayer cell-eating arena where you eat smaller cells and avoid bigger ones, with splitting and mass ejection. Popsplit is its own game though - it adds game modes such as Dual Mode and Instant, an XP and coin system with skins, and it is made to run well on a phone.
